Description

Most carnivorous plants are relatively small and slow growing, so won’t take up much room or spread too far.

Understand the diverse species within this genus and their unique methods of luring, trapping, and digesting insects. Adhesive traps lure insects and other small prey with sweet, sticky droplets that look like nectar or dewdrops. The corkscrew plant ( Genlisea violacea) is native to South America and develops small, purple blossoms. Peat-free Sarracenia and other carnivorous plants are also being made available for purchase in our Wisley Plant Centre, along with Floralive’s THRIVE growing media.

If you're growing lots of plants, you could try releasing the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis on to your plants.

The bright contrasting colours and easy care make Sarracenia (trumpet pitcher plant) not surprisingly one of the most popular outdoor carnivorous plants in the UK.Common mixes include long-fibered sphagnum moss, orchid bark, peat moss, perlite, coconut husk fibre (coir), and bonsai substrates like kanuma and akadama. They enjoy bright light with little direct sun, and they need plenty of warmth and humidity - a bright, steamy bathroom is ideal. Its wide, toilet bowl-shaped pitchers are very sturdy and just the right size for a tree shrew to stand astride while feeding on the nectar at the lid.

Water only when the compost is starting to dry out, and discard any excess rather than letting the container stand in water. Common butterwort ( Pinguicula vulgaris) grows throughout the UK on bogs, fens, wet heaths and moors. Check back later to make sure there is a little water left in the bottom to make sure you put in enough. Troubleshooting Tales: Encounter common challenges in carnivorous plant cultivation and explore troubleshooting tips to overcome issues.

If you’d like to dive deeper into the 170+ species or calculate the requirements of a specific plant, I’d suggest bookmarking my Nepenthes Interactive Guide. Suitable compost is available from carnivorous plant suppliers and some garden centres, or you can mix your own. Sarracenia flava is an eye-catching species that produces tall, lime-green pitchers with red veining on the throats and erect hoods. Growing plants from seeds is fun, lots of fun, and growing carnivorous plants from seeds is no exception. Most ericaceous compost contains peat, but there are several peat-free ericaceous mixes that have come onto the market in recent years.
