Description

We have visited them regularly since their construction and thought of them as we consumed this Ardbeg whisky. Kelpie takes its name from from a mythical demon that lives in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the Islay coast. This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Part-matured in virgin Black Sea oak casks as well as standard American oak ex-Bourbon casks before being masterfully married together to produce this Kelpie expression by Dr. I have to admit that up to Ardbog, the 2013 Ardbeg Day release, I was very happy with the special releases but I admit there had been a lapse of faith after the last few releases with Perpetuum being rock bottom, so when I heard on Kelpie, the 2017 bottling I was again very skeptic and thought to myself: Oh come on, what’s that wood voodoo of using casks from oak that grows in a remote region in Russia? Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. Finish: Seemingly lasting forever, with deep, deep, almost subterranean flavours of clove, tar, and rich toffee. There’s a bit of a lemony note as well which reminds me of the middle bits of a lemon hard candy after you’ve gone through the slightly sour layers. Conclusion: The nose is rich, and the palate is sharp, but it's that long buttery spicy finish that makes this whisky (along with lots of peat, of course) special. That aside, Ardbeg Kelpie contains whisky that has been matured in Black Sea oak casks, which is a little more unusual. On the palate more dark chocolate, smoky bacon, cloves, burnt toffee, an oily, briny texture and a tarry finish. A greater intensity to the chocolate and surprisingly more obvious fruity element, the other flavours are variants on a theme but are just packaged together better here.

In 1997 the distillery was bought by Glenmorangie (now LMVH) and production started again in 1997, going to maximum production in 1998. As ever with Ardbeg, the new name is borrowing from local folklore – Kelpie in these case being a water demon off the coast of Islay.
