He’s got a load of anger inside that he doesn’t know how to deal with so he tends to take it out on others at school. Middle class kids are remarkably good at ignoring their own privilege while kids like Ghost become almost invisible. But when Ghost impulsively challenges an elite sprinter to a race — and wins — the Olympic medalist track coach sees he has something: crazy natural talent. Then, one day, Ghost comes across a practice in the park and decides to race one of the sprinters, a decision that leads him to join Coach Brody’s elite track team: the Defenders.

I did a book talk for each of the books and handed them copies of each to read the first couple of pages. But now, after challenging a sprinter to a race at the local track, he’s won himself a place on an elite running team. There’s been a monumental push for increased diversity in children’s literature in the last few years.it's easy to praise Reynolds's vivid depiction of life in Ghost's urban neighborhood as one that's challenging and full of warmth, relationships and hope. It also doesn’t provide easy answers, or present sports as a magical solution for black teen boys, and it resists tropes associated with this kind of narrative.

Running is never something he plans to do, just like he never plans to get into altercations at school. Jason Reynolds always manages to squeeze numerous topics into his books without making the narrative feel over crowded. I just sit there with the other people waiting for the bus, except I’m never actually waiting for it.Coach Brody takes a chance on Ghost and gives him a future to run toward, but only if Ghost can learn to let go of the things he’s been running from.
