As much as she bent over backwards to please the people who did like her, she is cold and cuts off those who don’t take an instant liking of her. Last week, having begged my work library’s lovely and conciliatory acquisitions staff whose desk was piled way-high with books, to dig out my reservation, I indulged myself in a procrastiread of author Sally Thorne’s debut novel The Hating Game. The Hating Game is one of the most entertaining and clever workplace romance novels I've read in a long, long time. Sometimes he seemed kind of aggressive (a few times Lucy for sure thinks he is going to kill her and that’s just not very rom-commy to me) or pushy, which I did not love.

She barely existed outside of her interactions with Joshua and any personality traits she did have played right back into those tropes, or didn’t have much of an explanation, or with explanations that seemed plucked out of thin air. I liked the characters well enough and really felt for them during some scenes, but I just never 100% committed to them. A lot of tropes annoy me, but I am willing to spend good money to read a good ol’ hate-to-love book, and that’s probably the reason I ADORED this book. Mostly it’s a bunch of immature behavior that takes up so much time, it’s a wonder either of them gets any work done at all.Overall, The Hating Game is entertaining, sexy and adorable hate-to-love workplace romance that I recommend to fans of this genre. The phrase show don’t tell applies significantly to Thorne’s characterisation and provides its readers with a lesson on creating memorable characters. Mortal enemies and now in competition with each other, they are fighting for a lucrative promotion both literally and figuratively.

After a perfectly innocent elevator ride ends with an earth shattering kiss, Lucy starts to wonder whether she’s got Joshua Templeman all wrong. She was spunky, really funny, and was really sweet and just nice, but also knew how she should be treated. Contrast to our hard faced Joshua Templeman, typical tall, dark and handsome and shamelessly curt - who's only desire, it seems, is to have everyone quaking in fear around him. It was probably when she smiled at other guys, considering everything else that’s happened and been said. Whilst I would love to read a sequel, I would hate – pardon the pun – for the book to go in a different direction than it has done.

Hate-to-love books can be so great if they’re written well, and imo, this was perfectly paced, and super super addicting. There is no other consideration; even to the point that they decide that the losing party will quit. As these opposites attract throughout the story, readers may want to have an alternate source of oxygen handy. Plot reveals later make sense of this tactic, but I think it’s a good idea to be aware going in that readers are going to get a whole lot of Lucy, and the truth comes later. This bestselling, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy is an unmissable treat, perfect for fans of Christina Lauren’s UNHONEYMOONERS or Emily Henry’s BEACH READ.
