Description

I simply delight in being out there fishing and soaking up the sights and sounds that go with this great pastime.

Creel magazine was an upmarket magazine, edited by Venables for the first 18 issues, that ran for 47 issues from 1963 to 1966 - highly collectable. Richard Walker, rated by many as the finest all-round angler of all time, said of Bernard's creation, "Until Crabtree, many people regarded fishing as a joke. Peter is shown how to read the water, how and why a specific fish might be caught, and all the while the reader feels it first hand. BOUND IN PICTORIAL LIMP WRAPS, WITH COLOUR ILLUSTRATION OF FISH IN LANDING NET, AND CLEAR TITLES TO FRONT COVER, THIS DATED 1959 FIRST EDITION SIXTH IMPRESSION IS VG.

At his side Peter learned watercraft, a love and respect for the natural landscape, and an immense amount about the many different facets of fish behaviour. The Royalty remains one of the most popular and prolific Barbel fisheries in England, although amazingly The Hampshire Avon in it's lower reaches does contain more than one species! I get a kick out of taking out the old fiberglass rods every now and then, and I keep the first reel my dad bought me, a Zebco 202 as well as an old Mitchell spinning reel all oiled and ready to go. I bought this for my fishing mad 7 year old it is in a format he will read and enjoy and is still as relivent at getting the basics across as it ever was. Spine-strip slightly chipped as usual, slight creasing to cover but a good clean copy of the scarce first edition.

One of his most memorable trips resulted in landing a 700 kilo (1,540lb) six-gilled shark in 1959 off Madeira, then the largest fish caught on rod and line in the northern hemisphere. I have heard it said, not entirely tongue in cheek, that Mr Crabtree isn't old hat, he's pretty up to date. The illustrations are beautiful and the book symbolises the innocence and adventure of a good day's fishing. But the assistant editor did better than that, writing: "I have to say what Bernard Venables cannot say for himself: that he has written and illustrated the best fishing book since Izaak Walton.

THE CLOTH COVERED SPINE IS WORN AND STAINED WITH BUMPING AND SMALL TEARS AT BOTH ENDS, WHICH HAVE STARTED TO FRAY. OF course, as any sensible person knows, angling is a far more productive use of time than gardening, and within a year Mr Crabtree was going fishing. It is feasible to make this cast with the handles on the left but I find it easier to control the reel's rate of spin with my thumb rather than the little finger as per Mr Crabtree. Chip to tape at top of spine and mostly missing from spine edge, covers rather used, prize winner inscription to inside front cover.
